How did we begin to study parallel dimensions?
In addition to my other question on parallel dimensions, and don’t worry this will be the last on the subject.
And if someone could explain the string theory, it would help greatly.

It actually all started with quantum mechanics and the idea that (at the quantum level) a possible outcome was determined when a wave function ‘collapsed’ to one of several possible states. Look up ‘Heisenbergs Cat’. It’s a very famous thought experiment in quantum mechanics.
The going theory was that, until the box was opened, the cat was both alive -and- dead. And that the act of observing (extracting data from the system) was what caused the cat to actually -be- alive or dead. (This is a -very- deep result of QM, and if it doesn’t make a lot of sense, don’t worry about it. Lots of graduate students feel the same way ☺)
But then, in the early 1950’s, a young student named Hugh Everett (you might want to look him up too) asked, “What if the system doesn’t ‘collapse’ into one of it’s possible states (alive or dead) but rather it’s the Universe that bifurcates?” (splits into as many copies of itself as there are possible states) In one of those Universes the cat is alive, and in the other one it’s dead.
It was a damned good question because the observable result(s) are identical to those predicted by the older ‘classical’ view (usually called the ‘Copenhagen’ interpretation). But it wasn’t terribly popular and seemed kinda ’science-fictionish’ to the established scientific community. However…… Over time the idea has kinda caught on and has led to the idea that a thing called ‘quantum entanglement’ might lead to to the possibility of ‘quantum computing’. And quantum computing would be (in theory) as much faster than modern computers as modern computers are faster than carving things into a stone tablet with a chisel.
One of the better books on the subject (if you have time) is called ‘the Fabric of Reality’ by David Deutsch. Dave is the director of the quantum computing lab at Oxford and definitely knows his stuff.
